Project Eileen is a multimedia programme for UK secondary schools to help young people tackle the topic of death and grief. The charity seeks to raise awareness, address the stigma, combat isolation, build resilience and boost creativity.

Average 600,000 UK deaths per annum + Covid19 deaths 2020/21 – approximately 130,000 = 730,000 deaths
One person dies every minute in the UK
Every 22 minutes a parent dies, leaving 112 children left bereaved every day
The UK does not have a statutory bereavement policy for all schools
85% of young people between 20 and 24 years old who take their own life have had a bereavement *(1)
85% of 300 universities recently surveyed do not have a bereavement policy in place *(2)
A significant risk factor of suicide when someone is bereaved through suicide
The bereaved often say they feel as though they are going mad – there is a need to normalise grief through peer support
Risk factors: isolation, loneliness, trauma, PTSD, alcohol, drug abuse, self-harm
